If you’ve been thinking about setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), now is the time to act. The Ministry of Justice has announced that the cost of registering an LPA will increase from £82 to £92 per document starting 17 November 2025.
For most people, this means registering two LPAs – one for Property & Financial Affairs and one for Health & Welfare. That’s a total increase from £164 to £184 per person. For couples, the cost will rise by £40 just to register the same documents.
Why Are the Fees Increasing?
The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) says the fee adjustment is necessary to ensure that income from LPA applications better reflects the cost of delivering the service. The change is subject to parliamentary approval and follows Treasury guidance on managing public money.
Why You Shouldn’t Wait
Delaying your LPA application could mean:
- Paying more in fees after November
- Missing out on protection if something unexpected happens before your LPA is in place
- Leaving loved ones powerless to help manage your affairs during a crisis
LPAs give trusted individuals the legal authority to act on your behalf if you lose capacity. Without one, your family may face delays, stress, and costly court applications to gain control.
